Author’s Notes: The Fire Flower of Love

The Fire Flower of Love is a reference to The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! They randomly bring it up in the English sub I watched, I don’t know if the translation was accurate or not, but it stuck with me enough that I made this - so now our Fire Flower of Love at least has this story going for it!

I really love the Mario movies. I love what they do with the characters, how they provide more texture to the world of Mario, and I wanted to write this in part to share my love for it all with other people!

One of my favorite aspects of the films is how much work they put into Mario & Peach’s relationship! I think everyone takes for granted that those two are always gonna get together, but not those movies! I like that, we should want more of that instead of “Ms. Lady loves Mr. Guy because they’re both next to each other” in stuff. :)

It was surprisingly fun to write these versions of the characters and this version of the world, anyway! I’ve written Mario fan-fiction before, but getting to dial into the comedy and edges of the films was honestly refreshing. ^-^

I had fun playing with Peach’s perspective as an insider of the Mushroom Kingdom compared to Mario, how simultaneously aware and unaware she is about what’s confusing Mario with the Mushroom Kingdom’s ridiculousness. She has some of an idea about when what Toad is saying is going over Mario’s head, but a lot of stuff is basically just “fish now has to try to explain water to diver.”

I don’t usually lift lines from other writers, but it felt appropriate when I reached the dialogue I was adapting from the movie. I like to think I did a good job of contextualizing and adding to what was there.

It’s probably insane of me to put so much effort into making sure a sex scene feels like it would fit in the world of a PG-rated animated film, but these movies are special to me and if I’m not allowed to commit this sin against god what’s even the point of fan-fiction??? :p
