Introducing chalky.town
a chalky task planner for the atmosphere!
ntroducing chalky.town! This is my idea for making task planning a little bit fun. If you'd like the technical deep dive, that's here. In this post, we'll walk through how chalky.town works and the weird features that are built into the app.
chalky.town uses your atmosphere account for identity and provides the option of private data (via HappyView's permissioned spaces implementation) or public data on the PDS for sync between devices. Before login, everything stays in your browser.
Drag and Drop
dragging and dropping tasks between days works. it's neat.
Colors!!
This is something I didn't expect to use for myself... I'm red/green color blind and have always just said "f it" to color coding, but it's a really nice way to bucket the work.
Recurring Tasks
This is how I'll remember to brush my dog's teeth.
Subtasks and notes
Simple enough.
Day / Week / Month
Fancy Right Click Options
Copy task copies all of the task information with the title, notes, and subtasks each as a single markdown body. For example this one is:
**Movie night**
Pick something nobody's seen yet.
- [ ] Pick a movie
- [ ] Make snacksAnd pasting markdown works to make tasks too!
Fancy Controls
A paintbrush to color tasks
A select area to select groups of tasks - Sidenote: recurring tasks can't move days
All together now (this was a great idea from my friend, Eddie)
There's lots more
There's key shortcuts, click actions, cool cursors from @kenney.nl, and plenty of small interactions to make things interesting while you're task planning. (The cursors get stuck sometimes, I'm playing whack-a-mole trying to fix this. The custom cursors are here to stay on chalky.town whether they stay buggy or not though.)
The hope for chalky.town is just that it be something that is useful and maybe a little fun too :)
