Don't go into a romantic relationship expecting the other person to change.

ears ago, I was visiting with friends who had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and still seemed to be happy with each other, enjoyed each other's company, made each other laugh.

I asked: "If you were asked to share ONE piece of advice for couples on maintaining a good relationship, what would it be?"

Their answer: "Don't go into a relationship expecting the other person to change."

My husband and I will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary this year. I've been reflecting more about relationships, romantic and otherwise, and appreciating my friends' answer even more today than I did back then.
