October 17 - Mid Morning Florida
o this is online as Going Back To California, but I do think Mid Morning Florida is a better name.
This is a sad song that is willing to be sad, and it's about one of the most horrifying moments in rock history. Randy Rhoads, the 25 year old genius guitarist in Ozzy Osborne's band was travelling with the rest of the band when their bus stopped for repairs by an airstrip. The driver of the bus, who was also a pilot, borrowed one of the small planes at the airstrip, reportedly without permission, and "buzzed" the bus with Rhoads on board.
And in another world this is one of those "drunken prank" stories that comes up in MTV "interview to camera" shows 15 years later. Except that the plane clipped the bus, and then hit a house, and nobody on board the plane survived.
And after the horror of the crash, after days of absolute shock, with an inquest hanging over them to work out how this happened (the answer is "a. Cocaine") the band... went back on tour. Because tickets had been sold. And money needed to be made. And there's no such thing in this world as proper time to mourn.
