Web8, ATProto, and the future of the internet.

I've been seeing alot of non-social media, non bluesky, ATProto websites/apps popping up. You're probably reading this on one right now!

All of them sign in with your pds and store the data to your same account. Which can be owned by you if you choose.

I hope for a future where tons of websites and apps use ATProto in some way, even atleast for public data storage or even just signing in. Its a great feeling to really own my accounts and own my data. All under the same name too; my domain!!

Here's a great page explaining that. I think it would be awesome if everyone had their own domain, and therefore internet handle.

I really love all of this, so much that I believe this could be a whole new era of the web if done right. So...

I call it: Web8, or Web∞

or Web 8.0..

because Web3 was a disaster, and Web4 is even worse... and also 8 because if you flip it sideways, its an infinity symbol ∞

I actually wanted to coin Web4, but that was already coined for AI slop (makes sense 🤦🏾‍♀️). But I'm glad, because Web8 sounds way cooler, and the meaning behind it is even better!!

Now I hope people see this and it catches on, I can't actually contribute anything to this (I barely know html 😭😭). But it would be really cool. Here's some more cool articles that explain this way better than I did. I mainly just wanted to share the name I thought of and my growing love for ATProto and open source!
