Directed by Jeff Rupert, the four reed, eight brass and three rhythm’d Flying Horse Big Band gallop through a collection of fresh reads of standards, a couple originals and even a ringer or two. Rupert’s own “Swingin’ and Singin’” (arranged by tenor man Harry Allen) features a Basie-esque sax section hat is as strong as a heavyweight, with some beefy tenor solos by Paul Van Wormer and Fortunato Occhino. Guitarist Jose Valenzuela brings a rich pulse to pieces like the easy glide of “Blue Lamp” and a cozy “You’re Driving Me Crazy”, while guest Keith Koons adds a woody clarinet to a classy “The Continental”. The band stretches it’s borders a bit with a Nashville meets gospel idea as Rob Paparozzi sings and plays harmonica on a folksy read of John Hiatt’s “Feels Like Rain”, bringing the horse back to the country stable. Energetic equines.
