Drummer and leader Adonis Rose taps into the Gregg Hill songbook for a 2025 gig at Switzerland’s JazzAscona club. Rose brings together a team of Rex Gregory/as-arr, Ashlin Parker/tp, Miles Berry/ts, Seth Finch/p, Max  Moran/b and guest Phillip Manuel/voc for a wide ranging and crowd pleasing outing.

Phillip Manuel is a ringer here, with a style and delivery somewhere between Eddie Jefferson’s vocalese and Ernie Andrew’s bop, as he’s flexible around the dramtic roodes on “Cat’s Cradle”, hip as all get out with the leader on Keith Jarrett’s  fun ”Bop Be” and earthy around Parker’s sweet trumpet on the grooving “First Impulse”. The band glides easy with Finch in sizzling form on “Melissa’s Tune”, while the pianist and Manuel bring the house down on a riveting conversation of “Lush Life” that closes out the set, the evening and the mood. This Rose is in bloom.
