Playing piano and keyboards, Clay Giberson trios up with David Ambrosio/b and John Bishop/drd for a mix of jazz standards and originals that weave together like a swinging tapestry. Giberson has a bucketload of clever ideas here, taking “St. James Infirmary” and casting long shadows with Ambrosio’s bass, while letting the bass man assert himself on a swaying take of “Poinciana”. Bishop leads the Blue Note bopping on the totally hip “Mayreh” and digs a rivulet on the title p ieces. The leader’s own “Upper Road” displays rich hints of Bill Evans and Debussy, while “Speak” coaxes deft digits and design. Three’s not a crowd.
