Honduras-born and New Orleans residing, pianist Oscar Rossignoli brings up an impressive trio session with Lex Warshawshy/b and Peter Varnado with a mix of mostly originals and a handful of covers. His own material delivers an easy groove on one take of “Ebbs and Flows”, while an “espresso version” of it has his fingers sprinting to the finish line, while he strums dark strings on his intro to an elegant title tune. He does some Mozartian prancing on a joyful rad of “Gitanerias”, while he takes the intro from Warshawsky on “Punadito de Arena” and saunters into a romantic theme. Varnado’s brushes assuage Billy Strayhorn’s “Star-Crossed Lovers” and get funky on Ellis Marsalis’ “Swinging At The Haven” with the band going deep into a modal mood on the leader’s “Serpent”. Rich waves of ideas on this ocean of tunes.
