Catherine Russell gets us in the Christmas mood early, recording the holiday classic “Christmas In Your Heart” in tribute to her father, Luis Russell, who recorded it back in the swing era. Both versions are presented here, and more, as an instrumental take has Ben Rosenblum to add to the chanson atmosphere created by the team of Matt Munisteri/g, Tal Ronen/b, Domo Branch/dr and a string section. Russell herself is in comfy and cozy form, sounding like she’s performing at an intimate Left Bank club, giving clarity to every syllable like a light on a Christmas tree. Comparing her take to the vintage one by her father is a joy in seeing the various styles still emanating forth the joys of both the music and the holiday. Music for mistletoe.
