Meshell Ndegeocello: Synonym

Meshell Ngedeocello teams up with producer Dave Gamson once again to produce a poppish mix of summit meetings of various musical stars and genres. The mix sounds like a PBS radio station of the 1970s, as you get folksy pop with her and Cyntha Erivo on “I Knew  You Were Waiting For Me”, peppy upbeat hoots with Cat Power during “Don’t You Want Me” and urban soul when she’s joined by Rober Glasper on “Don’t Stp The Music”. There’s even some soul gospel with Chaka Khan funkys out on “Islands In The Stream”. Most haunting is the political message on the rural folk read of “With God On Our Side” with Bill Callahan and Chris Thile”, while things get stark with Madison Cunningham for a read of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me, Babe”.
