Fossil records show P. boisei possessed massive jaws and thick skulls built for grinding tough roots. From the neck down, however, scientists always assumed this species was short and squat. These newly uncovered prints throw a massive wrench into that theory. The internal foot mechanics — like flatter arches and highly mobile big toes — look exactly like what you would expect from Paranthropus boisei. A Massive case of mistaken identity

Here is where the math creates a major problem for paleontologists. By measuring the length and depth of a footprint, experts can highly accurately estimate height and body mass.
