How the ideomotor effect drives the board

Why does the ouija board subconscious mind connection feel so convincingly supernatural? The answer lies in a well-documented neurological trick called the ideomotor effect.

First coined by physician William Benjamin Carpenter in 1852, the ideomotor effect describes unconscious, involuntary muscle movements triggered by an expectation alone. You aren’t consciously trying to move your fingers. In fact, your brain deliberately hides the physical effort from your awareness (Shin et al., 2023).

Think of it like swallowing or blinking. You can control these actions when paying attention, but your body executes them automatically most of the time. When your brain’s motor cortex prepares a movement, it generates two signals:

Science solved the riddle of talking boards nearly two centuries ago. Long before commercial board games hit shelves, researchers put these phenomena under strict laboratory scrutiny.

Michael Faraday’s Table-Turning Test (1853)

Physicist Michael Faraday investigated “table-turning” — a Victorian trend identical in mechanics to talking boards. Faraday placed stackable cards separated by sticky lever indicators between the participants’ hands and the table top.

If an outside spirit moved the table, the table top would slide first, moving the bottom cards before the hands. Instead, Faraday’s apparatus proved the top cards moved before the table top. Sitters were pushing the table themselves, completely unaware of their own force.

The UBC Blindfold Study (2012)

Researchers at the Visual Cognition Lab at the University of British Columbia designed a clever experiment testing psychology behind talking boards (Gauchou et al., 2012).

Participants were told they were playing Ouija with a partner. After blindfolding the participant, the researchers quietly stepped away, leaving the participant alone on the board.

  • When asked facts they consciously knew: Accuracy was high.
  • When asked obscure facts they thought they were guessing: Conscious verbal answers yielded 50% accuracy (pure chance). Yet their Ouija responses scored 65% accuracy.

The study proved two crucial facts:

  1. The board moves fine with only one person — provided they think someone else is helping.
  2. The ideomotor effect can access implicit memory — stored information your conscious mind has temporarily forgotten.
