Flushes
lushes is a small social app for the bathroom, built on the AT Protocol (the same network behind Bluesky). You sign in with your Bluesky account, pick an emoji, and post a "flush" to say you're on the toilet. Each one is saved as a record on your own data server, so you keep your own data.
It started as a joke and a proof of concept. I'd been playing with the idea of personal lexicons (custom record types on my own domain) and put a cheap NFC sticker next to my toilet that logs a "flush" whenever I tap my phone to it. It got a shoutout on stage at SXSW in 2025, which I didn't expect for such a silly proof of concept.
A year later I relaunched the app with a new design, new features, and an attached charity fundraiser for The Trevor Project. The concept was to integrate the bathroom themed Flushes app with a fundraiser to benefit transgender youth because of how they are impacted by discriminatory "bathroom bills" in the United States. We raised $1,000 in the first few days.
