Filming a Live Performance is Sabotage
he fundamental heart of a live performance is interaction with the audience. Energy is shared between performer(s) and audience, creating something more profound than the performance by itself.
Filming a live performance is cutting out this heart in order to manufacture a vapid facsimile. The filmer is a combatant, willfully cutting out the heart of the performance in order to create a lifeless commodity.
The combatant's choice to shift their attention away from the performance in order to produce a recording is part of their experience of that performance. That sabotage becomes a part of the art being created in that moment, for the saboteur. As such, that moment of sabotaging the performance is, in fact, a unique creation in and of itself.
The saboteur must be allowed to approach the performance with their full volition, in all ways engaging (or disengaging) as they choose. They may choose to observe the performance through a mobile screen. That choice become part of their experience of the performance.
