Animated images

Are they still going to animate?

reenGale process uploaded images and converts it to the AVIF format. Let's see if they will still animate after conversion and if we can use the direct link in ,[object Object],.

Animated PNG to AVIF

Animated PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is an extension to PNG format to incorporate the animations. Just like animated GIFs, the APNG format is used to present the animations. An edge of APNG over GIF is, it supports 24-bit transparency whereas GIF supports only 8-bit. [emphasis added] Furthermore, APNG provides a smoother animation as compared to an animated GIF [emphasis added].

Conclusion

Currently, once the content is "posted", the animation stops. I am not sure if it was because of the conversion engine (in this case, GreenGale's conversion to AVIF) or if it is an ATProto requirement or restriction (this is what happens in any microblogging frontend clients as of this post, even if the graphics was saved in the PDS as WebP or AVIF.
