Bus trip to El Granada
Spending an afternoon cycling along the Pacific coast! No parking hassles!
had an odd afternoon off and I decided to take my Brompton to El Granada to try biking along the California Coastal Trail. I read that they recently opened a new pedestrian and bike bridge, the Mirada Bridge, connecting two disconnected parts of the trail and I wanted to go try it out. I wanted to ride down the coast and eventually head over the mountains (via Bus) and take the Caltrain back home. My itinerary led me to the Daly City BART where i caught two busses that took me to Moss Beach, just outside El Granada.
On the way I noticed how nice the Pacifica was and I made a mental note to make sure to come back, I think there is a nice coast ride from the Pacifica to Linda Mar if you bus past the scary highway bits!
I rode all the way along the coast to Half Moon Bay where I caught the 294 bus back to the Caltrain. The trail is really quite nice and I would definitely go again on a sunny day. It would be great to relax on the beach if it was warmer. All in all it was a fun time trying out the bus + Brompton combo to get somewhere along the coast so easily. I have made notes of things to see again and will probably have a few more bus trips out here given how easy it was to access!
Full itinerary
- Took the 110 in Daly City towards Linda Mar via Pacifica
- Transferred to 117 in Linda Mar towards Half Moon Bay
- Got off at Calfornia St and start riding
- Since the San Vicente Creek Bridge is closed, stop at the Ranger Station and the cove to see the preserved whale skeleton. (Note to self, see Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in the future).
- I rode through Pillar Point Bluffs which was overall pretty good but then you end up heading towards the city where it becomes loose gravel. This made it a bit difficult to ride smoothly. I ended up riding really slow and then walked the rest of the way to the parking lot.
- Stopped at Barbara's Fishtrap for Fish and Chips
- Stopped to watch Seals and Surfers
- I rode to Half Moon Bay, I tried to go further but eventually decided to turn back at and head up to the town near Poplar Beach. The paved path ends near here and the rest is packed dirt which is still quite rideable. I will probably return here to continue riding!
- Take the 294 back to the Hillsdale Caltrain Station.
