Lights of a Casino Night – Music Monday – July 20, 2026

If you’ve known me for any amount of time, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of jazz and big band music.

You probably also know that I’m a big fan of video game music (especially if you’ve been following Music Monday posts this year). One of my first introductions to the two genres colliding had to be in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Casino Night Zone (the 1-Player version) is the track for this week!

I didn’t have the game originally, as my cousin was the one with the Sega Genesis, but I eventually got to play Sonic 2 on my PC with the Sega Smash Pack 2. This is unrelated to the music, but I’m realizing to start I played Sonic 2 legally more on keyboard than on a Genesis controller growing up until I got Sonic Mega Collection Plus on Xbox.

Anyway, back to Casino Night Zone. You have just gotten past Aquatic Ruin Zone and as the zone loads, you get a swing 4 count drum hit and those synths come in blaring. They wanted to get the feel of a big jazzy band using 16-bit instruments and they succeeded. The intro hits and the first thing I notice is the walking bass line. The synth trumpets holding the melody and the counter melody using a similar instrument (maybe saxes?) It follows a simple structure as it’s meant to repeat indefinitely but has a great ABC structure where you can pick out segments of the song (Intro, Part A, Part B, etc.)

While I enjoy the original Sonic 2 version of the game, I really grew an appreciation for the game when the 3DS version of Sonic Generations came out as well as the Casino Night DLC for the console/PC versions and realized the song in a full jazz band:

Adding the real live instruments and adding the improv section in the middle of the song just really stepped it up a few notches. This one was another one that I’m glad had a sound test (and it was easy to find on YouTube)

A special shout out to Act 1 on the 3DS port of Sonic Generations where they took the “classic” version and even spruced it up. It wasn’t a one to one recreation of the Genesis version but added some interesting percussion and counter-melodies not present in the original song:

Now if this wasn’t jazzy enough, have you ever heard a live band cover it? The 8-Bit Big Band is probably one of my favorite cover bands on YouTube and they covered the Casino Night Zone recently and it’s SO GOOD.

I’m not much of a gambler, but if I were, I would expect the casinos to be glitzy and have songs like this in the background.

I went down a rabbit hole looking for the cover above and found some really good covers as well that I’m going to show up here. I love when video game music brings musicians together to create.
