MCP Eastern Region endorses Chakwera

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Zomba District Committee has endorsed Lazarus Chakwera to continue leading the party, declaring him the best candidate to head the party.

The endorsement was announced during an interface meeting in the Eastern Region, where the committee said it has assessed those associated with the party’s presidency and concluded that no other member matched Chakwera’s leadership credentials.

The committee’s vice chairperson said the decision followed consultations among district leaders, who agreed to rally behind Chakwera as the party prepares to elect its leadership ahead of the 2030 General Election.

“We have weighed all candidates aligning themselves with the party’s presidency but have seen none befitting Dr. Chakwera’s calibre. We have therefore resolved to endorse him,” the vice chairperson said.

The committee also urged all its members to remain united behind the resolution as preparations for the national convention gather pace.

According to the vice chairperson, the committee believes Chakwera remains the party’s strongest candidate to lead MCP into the 2030 elections.

“Allowing anyone other than Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to lead the party to the 2030 general elections would be digging our own grave, as the party would not win the 2030 elections,” the vice chairperson said.

The endorsement adds to early political positioning within MCP as the governing party gears up for its 2029 elective convention, where delegates are expected to choose the leadership that will lead the party into the 2030 General Election.
