CUNIMA dismisses TB rumours

The Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) has dismissed social media reports alleging a tuberculosis (TB) outbreak among its students.

The university said the rumours alleged that a TB outbreak has occurred among students but maintained that the claims were unfounded.

In a statement issued by the University Registrar, CUNIMA said most students are currently on the 2026 first semester break, with only some from the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery remaining on campus for clinical placements.

“The University, therefore, wishes to assure the public that the information circulating on social media is false and should be treated as fake news,” the statement said.

The university also appealed to members of the public to avoid creating, sharing, or spreading unverified information, warning that doing so can cause unnecessary fear, confusion, and other serious consequences.

It further urged the public to rely on the university’s official communication channels for accurate and verified information.

The statement came after claims circulated on social media alleging that a tuberculosis outbreak had occurred among CUNIMA students.

The university said it issued the clarification to address the misinformation and reassure the public.
