iss Malawi Thandi Chisi has been left out of Miss World 2026. The Miss Malawi Organisation has instead chosen First Princess Ireen Navicha to represent the country.

The decision has sparked controversy because Thandi meets the competition’s published age requirements. Several other confirmed contestants are also 27 years old, just like Thandi.

Miss Malawi organisation officials are reported to have indicated that Thandi’s age counted against her, leading to Navicha’s selection instead of the reigning queen. Miss Malawi spokesperson Stephen Mdala is said to have trold Slice Magazine “age mattered” in the decision to snub her.

“Organisers say Miss World has an age limit of 27, and they wanted a younger representative” reported Slice Magazine.

However, the Miss World Organisation’s age eligibility criteria generally covers contestants aged 17 to 27, although implementation can vary by national organisation.

Thandi, who was born on 13 February, will still be 27 years old when the Miss World final takes place on 5 September 2026. On the face of the published rules, she therefore falls within the stated age range.

First Princess Ireen Navicha will represent Malawi at the Miss World 2026 pageant after being selected by the Miss Malawi Organisation.

Other 27-year-olds heading to Miss World

The debate has intensified because several contestants confirmed for Miss World 2026 are also 27 years old.

They include:

  • Argentina – Alina Akselrad
  • Bahamas – Marechan Burrows
  • Chile – Ignacia Fernandez
  • Guyana – Kelcia Nelson
  • Nepal – Luna Luite
  • Scotland – Eilidh MacDonald
  • South Africa – Romanda Hombir
  • Sri Lanka – Prathibha

Their participation has prompted further questions about how the age eligibility rules are interpreted and applied by different national organisations.

20 year old Ireen Navicha is the daughter of Cabinet minister Mary Navicha, a senior member of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Malawi24 has found no public evidence that her family connections influenced the Miss Malawi Organisation’s decision to select the country’s representative for Miss World 2026.

Snubbed: Reigning Miss Malawi Thandi Chisi will still be 27 when Miss World 2026 takes place, but the Miss Malawi Organisation has selected First Princess Ireen Navicha to represent Malawi.

South Africa facing similar debate

The issue is also playing out in neighbouring South Africa. Romanda Hombir, a 27-year-old clinical audiologist and motivational speaker, is expected to represent the country at Miss World.

However, some South Africans have questioned why reigning Miss South Africa Qhawekazi Mazaleni, who is 24, will not compete.

The explanation is different from Malawi’s situation. Miss World South Africa and Miss South Africa are separate organisations with different franchise holders. Winning Miss South Africa does not automatically make someone the country’s representative at Miss World.

Miss World is different from Miss Universe

The controversy has also highlighted confusion between the world’s two biggest beauty pageants. The Miss Malawi Organisation is reported to have indicated that Thandi could instead compete at Miss Universe, which no longer has an upper age limit.

However, Miss World and Miss Universe are separate international competitions and operate independently. They are run by different organisations with different franchise holders, qualification systems and national licences. As such, eligibility for one competition does not automatically determine eligibility for the other.
