Mkondezi market set to change local trade

The government has launched a major infrastructure project in Nkhata Bay that is expected to reshape the way thousands of people do business and earn a living.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Ben Phiri on Thursday officially launched the construction of the K6.8 billion Mkondezi Market, saying the investment is aimed at expanding trading opportunities, improving business conditions and stimulating economic growth in the district.

Phiri said the modern market facility will provide traders and communities in the area with improved access to better trading infrastructure while creating an environment that supports economic growth.

Speaking after receiving a detailed presentation of the market design from the contractor, the minister said the project reflects the government’s commitment to expanding modern market facilities across the country.

He said the development of market infrastructure remains a key component in promoting local businesses, supporting entrepreneurship and strengthening economic activities at community level.

The Mkondezi Market project is being implemented under the Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Programme, an initiative designed to promote agricultural commercialisation and increase opportunities for businesses linked to the agriculture sector.

The government expects the facility to enhance trading conditions for local entrepreneurs while contributing to the broader goal of building sustainable economic opportunities in rural communities.
