A taste of the seafood comes to Blantyre

Blantyre is scheduled to host its inaugural seafood festival on Saturday, July 25, 2026 , marking a significant development in the city’s culinary landscape.

The event aims to introduce residents to a diverse array of ocean and lake delicacies while promoting the nutritional benefits of seafood consumption.

Scheduled to take place at Café Five79 in Sunnyside, the festival will provide attendees with a comprehensive gastronomic experience. The curated menu will feature a selection of both oceanic and freshwater specialties, notably sushi, seafood boils, and Chambo.

These culinary offerings will be complemented by live musical performances and a variety of beverages.

The initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between Umami Food and Café Five79.

Kawelama: festival aims to promote culture

According to the organizers, the primary objective of the festival extends beyond providing public entertainment, it represents a strategic effort to foster a local culture of seafood consumption and to educate the public on its associated health advantages.

“We have organised the festival to promote the culture of eating seafood, which has more health benefits,” Umami CEO Monique Kawelama stated in an interview with Malawi24 ahead of the event.

For prospective attendees, navigating to the Sunnyside venue requires specific directions. Patrons departing from St Patrick’s School should proceed along the route into the Sunnyside area.

After passing three successive speed humps, drivers are advised to take the left-hand turn that descends. Upon approaching a bend distinguished by large trees, vehicles should take the left exit onto an unpaved road.
