Masters chase upset against Wanderers

Masters FC head coach Peter Mponda has declared his side’s intention to go for maximum points when they face defending champions Mighty Wanderers in an FDH Bank Premiership clash at Mpira Stadium on Sunday.

The Lilongwe-based side heads into the encounter seeking to improve its away record after suffering defeats to Ekhaya FC and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in previous matches played in Blantyre.

Despite surrendering a late 2-1 lead to draw 2-2 against Moyale FC in Mzuzu last weekend, Mponda believes his players produced one of their best performances away from home and can build on that display.

“We know it will be a very tough game because they are the defending champions and they have been very consistent, but the boys are prepared and we are going there to get three points,” said Mponda.

The Masters coach said the team has recovered from the disappointment of conceding a stoppage-time equaliser against Moyale and is now fully focused on Sunday’s assignment.

He also expressed confidence that the squad is progressing despite being newly assembled this season, noting that the players have adapted well and continue to improve with every match.

Masters go into the fixture sitting sixth on the 16-team table with 16 points, five behind joint leaders Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers, while FCB Nyasa Big Bullets occupy third place with 20 points and remain the league’s only unbeaten side.

Mponda further revealed that almost his entire squad is available for selection, with only a few players being assessed after picking up minor knocks, as Masters look to produce one of the biggest results of the weekend against the league leaders.
