Bullets in panic

The aura is fading, rivals are pulling away and pressure is mounting on FCB Nyasa Big Bullets after a defeat to GC Dedza Dynamos, leaving the 2024 champions needing an immediate response to keep elite league crown within reach.

On Saturday, Bullets suffered their first defeat of the 2026 FDH Bank Premiership, falling 1-0 to Goshen City Dedza Dynamos at Dedza Stadium as Marco Chiwaya’s 41st-minute header ended their unbeaten run.

The hosts controlled possession for long spells, created the clearer scoring opportunities and frustrated Bullets with disciplined defending and purposeful attacking football.

From the opening whistle, Dedza showed they had not come to sit back. Tathedwa Willard repeatedly unsettled the Bullets defence with his composure and direct running, while Sunganani Geoffrey and Chifunilo Mpinganjila stretched the visitors with dangerous attacks. Goalkeeper Nyasulu was forced into a series of crucial saves to keep Bullets within touching distance.

Bullets, meanwhile, looked unusually disjointed. Their attacking moves frequently broke down in the final third, while the few chances they created lacked conviction and were comfortably dealt with by a well-organised Dedza defence marshalled by Lughano Kaira.

The breakthrough came four minutes before half-time when Geoffrey delivered a teasing cross for Marco Chiwaya, who rose above the Bullets defence to head home. It was a goal that capped an impressive first-half performance by the hosts, who had looked the more confident and enterprising side.

The pattern remained unchanged after the restart. Although Bullets introduced fresh attacking options in search of an equaliser, Dedza continued to dictate the tempo, remaining compact at the back while threatening on the counter-attack. Even during Bullets’ late spell of pressure, the hosts rarely looked like surrendering their advantage.

The defeat is significant beyond the loss of three points. Bullets arrived in Dedza as the league’s only unbeaten side, but that record has now gone, exposing vulnerabilities that rival teams will take confidence from. More importantly, the performance suggested the former champions were outplayed rather than simply outlucked.

For Dedza, the victory could prove a defining moment in their campaign. The three points lift them to 12 points from 11 matches, creating breathing space above the relegation zone and providing renewed belief after a difficult start to the season. More importantly, defeating one of Malawi’s football giants demonstrates that they possess the quality and organisation to compete with the league’s elite.

For Bullets, however, the setback carries wider implications for the title race. They remain on 20 points from 11 matches, while Blue Eagles have climbed to the top of the table with 22 points. Mighty Wanderers and Silver Strikers, who both had 21 points before the weekend’s fixtures, also have a game in hand, meaning Bullets risk slipping further behind if results elsewhere go against them.

Saturday’s result also underlined a growing trend in this season’s FDH Bank Premiership. Reputation alone is no longer enough to guarantee victory. Dedza outplayed Bullets in possession, created the better chances and executed their game plan with discipline and confidence, sending a strong message that the race for the championship is becoming increasingly competitive.

For Bullets, the challenge now is not only to bounce back from their first defeat of the season but also to prove they remain genuine title contenders. For Dedza, this was more than a memorable victory, it was a statement that they are capable of upsetting the established order and shaping the outcome of this year’s championship race.
