Tamia Ja dares Malawi laws with same sex reveal

Renowned content creator Hannah Jabesi, popularly known as Tamia Ja, has publicly unveiled her girlfriend, putting Malawi’s laws on same sex relationships back in the spotlight and raising questions over whether authorities will respond.

The public declaration, made on Sunday, comes in a country where certain same sex sexual acts remain criminal offences under the Penal Code. Despite the legal position, Tamia Ja appeared unfazed as she shared her relationship with thousands of followers.

“I love her so much ❤️. This weekend, choose peace over pressure and joy over stress. Happy Weekend to everyone. Feel free to comment, nothing will happen. I am happy 😊,” she captioned a video of herself with the said girlfriendin a car.

Hours later, she shared another video of herself with her girlfriend again at R & L Farm, indicating they had spent the weekend together.

“Ndili busy, it’s weekend. I only work hard from Monday to Friday, so the weekend is my time to relax 😌. I had an amazing time with my girl at R & L Farm. ❤️🌿,” she wrote.

The posts echo remarks she made last year during an interview with content creator Danrrow, where she declined to confirm or deny speculation about her sexuality.

“What I can say is this: whether I am a lesbian or not, it’s my life. He who hears, hears; the wise hear and understand. If I am a lesbian, it doesn’t matter, it’s my life,” she said.

Asked about videos showing her kissing other women, Tamia Ja replied: “What you hear is what you hear, and that’s what it is.”

Her latest posts have reignited debate over Malawi’s laws criminalizing certain same sex sexual conduct.

Section 137A of the Penal Code criminalizes “indecent practices between females” and carries a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment.

Sections 153 and 154 prohibit “carnal knowledge against the order of nature” and attempted unnatural offences, with penalties of up to 14 years’ imprisonment.

As of Sunday, authorities had not commented on the matter.
