Mystery liquid drama overshadowed as Masters frustrate Wanderers

A bizarre liquid-throwing incident failed to rattle Masters FC as they fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against league leaders Mighty Wanderers in a tense FDH Bank Premiership clash at Mpira Stadium on Sunday.

The incident came midway through the second half when a fan threw a bottle containing liquid towards the Masters goal area, with the goalkeeper fortunately avoiding being hit.

The liquid nevertheless spilled inside the goal area, creating an unusual interruption to an already fiercely contested match.

While the circumstances surrounding the liquid and the fan’s motive remained unclear, the incident added tension to a game in which Masters were already under pressure from a Wanderers side desperate to secure victory and widen its advantage at the top of the table.

Wanderers had made the perfect start, with Promise Kamwendo putting the home side ahead in the eighth minute after connecting with Gaddie Chirwa’s corner.

But Masters responded almost immediately, Patrick Phiri finding the equaliser just a minute later to ensure the leaders’ early advantage lasted barely any time.

That quick response proved important. Wanderers subsequently enjoyed more of the possession, but Masters refused to allow the league leaders’ control of the ball to translate into a winning goal.

As the match progressed, the contest became increasingly physical and tense, with both teams eventually attacking in waves.

The liquid incident added another layer to the drama, but Masters remained in the contest and continued to frustrate Wanderers.

The visitors’ resilience was particularly significant given what was at stake for Wanderers. Victory would have allowed the leaders to create some breathing room at the summit, but Masters’ resistance ensured that the gap remained tight.

The draw left Wanderers on 22 points after 11 matches, level with Silver Strikers and Blue Eagles. Rather than widening their lead, Wanderers found themselves still having to look over their shoulders at two serious challengers.

For Masters, the point represented a valuable reward for their resilience. They had to absorb pressure, cope with an unusual off-field incident and withstand Wanderers’ attempts to regain the lead, yet still left Mpira Stadium with a share of the spoils.In the end, it was not the liquid incident that determined the result.

It was Masters’ ability to remain composed and organised after the disruption and prevent Wanderers from converting their pressure into the goal that could have changed the title race.

Elsewhere, Mitundu Luanar FC came from behind to draw 1-1 against Silver Strikers, while a Kelvin Hang’anda hat-trick inspired Kamuzu Barracks to a comfortable 4-1 win over Mafco FC at Civo Stadium.

At Karonga Stadium, Karonga United were 2-1 winners over struggling Crerk Sporting Club to move out of the relegation zone.
