Chakwera never again, says MCP loyalist

A fierce rebellion is brewing inside the Malawi Congress Party as one of its own loyalists launches a brutal attack on President Lazarus Chakwera, declaring that he should never be trusted with the presidency again.

Nkhotakota Central legislator Silvester Ayuba James said blaming Chakwera’s inner circle for his administration’s failures is misleading because many of the same people remain influential within the party and have even been appointed to the shadow cabinet.

Writing on his Facebook page, James questioned why those blamed for Chakwera’s shortcomings were retained if they were truly responsible for his poor performance.

“Akuti aChakwera anali munthu wabwino, koma anawasokoneza ndi amene anawazungulira. Nde mufunse kuti owazungulirawo pano anapita kuti? Mupenza kuti onse akanawazungulirabe, happily so. Ndipo ambiri mpaka anawaika mu shadow cabinet yawo,” he wrote.

James: Chakwera never again

The lawmaker said he would never vote for Chakwera again, describing him as indecisive, slow in making decisions and disconnected from the realities facing ordinary Malawians.

“I can never vote again for an indecisive, slow and street-dumb person. I know what this country needs and I can’t be loyal to individuals for personal benefits more than I am loyal to the nation,” he said.

James also accused Chakwera of lacking the courage to dismiss underperforming officials whom he had personally appointed, arguing that leadership qualities do not fundamentally change at an advanced age.

He further criticised what he described as a narrow political mindset among some MCP loyalists from the Central Region, saying they wrongly believe strong support in a few areas is enough to win a national election.

According to James, such thinking has contributed to the party’s continued struggle to broaden its support across the country.
