Fredokiss: Chakwera betrayed Chilima

Former President Lazarus Chakwera betrayed the late Saulos Chilima, UTM National Youth Director Penjani Fredokiss Kalua has claimed. Kalua said Chakwera failed to honour the Tonse Alliance agreement after the coalition won power in 2020.

Kalua said the Tonse Alliance pact was never about sharing Cabinet posts or political positions. Instead, he said, it was a contract with Malawians to create one million jobs, establish mega farms and deliver the transformation promised during the 2020 campaign.

Speaking on a local television programme on Sunday, the Soche Zingwangwa legislator said if he ever had the opportunity to sit down with Chakwera, that is the message he would deliver.

He accused Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) of abandoning both the coalition government pact and Chilima’s vision once they took power.

Kalua also said arrogance within the MCP leadership ultimately cost the party power.”I hope the DPP has learned from that,” he said.

Turning to the current administration, Kalua gave the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government a cautious endorsement after about nine months in office.

He credited the government with restoring fuel availability and helping stabilise the prices of some commodities.

However, he said the country’s foreign exchange crisis remains unresolved and continues to undermine businesses and the wider economy.
