Scorchers’ new kit kicks off fan derby

Before they have even kicked a ball at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Malawi’s Scorchers have already scored one of the tournament’s biggest talking points, their new ponchos.

The senior women’s national team unveiled the colourful outfit on Saturday as they arrived in Rabat ahead of Tuesday’s heavyweight opener against Nigeria, setting off a lively contest in the court of public opinion.

After the Malawi National Football Team Facebook page shared the photos, Malawi24 asked fans: “What do you think of this outfit? Ndipo telala wake ndi ndani? #Scorchers.”

The comments section quickly turned into its own derby.

Some supporters gave the outfit a standing ovation. Azina Mwachande and Shen Handson both described it as “creative,” while McCarthy Carue declared it “Massive.”

Others tackled it with humour.

Shareef Ameen Mh Matola said the ponchos were still an upgrade on the team’s previous jackets. Wanangwa Kalumendo Gondwe joked the players looked like “Malawian Masai,” while Don Yaxy Dah Ancient compared them to “manja a Roy View.”

For some fans, however, style means little without results.

Isaac Ophiri Abraham called the outfit “the best” before quipping, “pa ground ndi zero,” while Adam Stola said the real test would be whether the Scorchers could turn good looks into victories.

Not everyone was ready to wave the new colours.

“Outfit iyi aaaah siyabho kukoma kwake ndizamabebi,” wrote Richard Stonard.

Nyendwa Justine said the attire looked more like a church uniform than football wear, commenting: “Nimaganiza ndi masintha CCAP kuti akujambula video.”

Hashtag Plug added: “I didn’t like it though… poti Makondamakonda let them enjoy.”

Now, with Nigeria waiting at the first whistle, the Scorchers have one chance to silence the fashion debate, not with their ponchos, but with their football.
