MRA confident of hitting revenue target

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says a strong first quarter has boosted its confidence that it will achieve its annual revenue collection target, with improved systems and new measures expected to keep collections on track.

MRA was tasked with collecting K6.2 trillion in the 2026/2027 financial year to support government operations and development programmes.

Speaking in Blantyre on Monday after a media training, MRA Head of Corporate Affairs Wilma Chalulu said the authority started the financial year on a positive note after exceeding its first-quarter target.

Chalulu said the performance was driven by new tax measures, enforcement activities and improved efficiency in MRA systems, which have helped increase revenue collection.

“We are very optimistic that we will be able to meet our target because we have started well and there are various initiatives in place,” she said.

She said the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS) and other compliance initiatives are among the measures expected to strengthen revenue mobilisation.

Chalulu said mining royalties were among the key contributors to the first-quarter performance, with MRA collecting more than K28 billion against a target of K600 million.

She attributed the surge largely to gold sales at the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

Meanwhile, MRA said it is working with the media to improve public understanding of taxation and encourage citizens to fulfil their obligations.

Chalulu said the authority has so far registered more than 7,000 properties in Blantyre and Lilongwe under the first phase of its rental income tax exercise, with plans to expand the registration to other areas.
