waila Secondary School in Lilongwe could soon join Malawi’s elite national secondary schools, with the government considering an upgrade.
Education Minister Bright Msaka says the ministry is assessing the best way to utilise the historic school, which is centrally located in the capital city.
“We are looking at the best way of utilising that beautiful secondary school, either making it a district secondary school, or better yet, making it a national secondary school,” Msaka said.
Msaka was responding to Lilongwe City Bwaila Member of Parliament Precious Kabambe, who asked the ministry to refurbish Bwaila’s dilapidated boarding facilities and restore boarding services.
Kabambe also asked the government to consider upgrading Chilambula Secondary School to a full secondary school to expand access to secondary education.
Msaka says making Bwaila a national school would provide Lilongwe with a co-educational national secondary school, complementing Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, which caters for girls.
He says the proposal is part of government’s efforts to expand access to secondary education through free secondary education, recruitment of 1,100 secondary school teachers and increased availability of schools closer to learners’ communities.
