Mzuzu Youth Caucus condemns Namiwa’s police summons

The summoning of CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa has drawn condemnation from the Mzuzu Youth Caucus which says the move is linked to his expose on alleged corruption in the ADL land deal.

In a statement signed by the organisation’s chairperson, Gomezgani Nkhoma, the caucus has faulted the timing of the summons as highly suspicious as it comes barely three days after Namiwa held a press briefing in Lilongwe.

Nkhoma said the briefing questioned the controversial acquisition of land belonging to the Airport Development Limited [ADL] in Lumbadzi, Lilongwe, by senior Cabinet Ministers and individuals of Asian origin, amid allegations of corruption within the Ministry of Lands.

The Caucus further accused state institutions mandated to fight financial crime, including the Anti-Corruption Bureau [ACB], the Financial Intelligence Authority [FIA], and the Director of Public Prosecutions [DPP], of openly working with those in power and failing to fight corruption.

The caucus has made three demands to government. First, an immediate cessation of harassment of Namiwa, saying that he is demanding justice for Malawians because the government has crippled official accountability institutions.

Second, the caucus called for the sacking of every Minister implicated in the alleged ADL land scandal and other corruption dealings within the next 48 hours.

Third, it demanded restoration of institutional integrity, urging President Mutharika to stop interfering in corruption cases, end pardons for convicted criminals, and restore independence to the ACB, FIA and DPP.

Sylvester Namiwa has been ordered to appear for questioning at the National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe today, July 30, 2026 at 2:30 PM.
