American pilot fined for unauthorized landing

An American pilot has found himself on the wrong side of the law after landing an aircraft at Chileka International Airport without authorization.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa identified the American as Terry Lee Jenningson.

Mikuwa said Jenningson was arrested on Wednesday after flying into Malawi from South Africa and landing without complying with aviation regulations.

The matter was taken to the Blantyre Magistrate’s Court, where Magistrate Paul Chiotcha found Jenningson guilty.

The court fined him K3 million or, in default, sentenced him to one year in prison. Jenningson paid the fine.

The aircraft had travelled to Malawi to pick up a family that had been on holiday before flying them to Portugal.
