Man has been arrested for theft of clothes
24-year-old man has been jailed for eight years with hard labour after stealing clothes worth K12 million from a house in Nkhotakota.
The Second Grade Magistrate’s Court in Nkhotakota convicted Maganjira Yashini on Monday, August 10, 2026, on charges of burglary and theft.
The court heard that Yashini broke into a house at Bango Village during the night of June 6 to 7, 2026, while the homeowner was asleep.
State Prosecutor Sub-Inspector Harrison Mtambalika told the court that Yashini gained entry by removing bricks from a section of the house near the main door.
He then stole two mbeya bags containing new clothes valued at K12 million.
Yashini pleaded not guilty, prompting the prosecution to parade three witnesses who testified and helped prove the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The State asked the court to impose a custodial sentence, describing the offences as serious and saying a stiff punishment would deter other would-be offenders.
Passing sentence, Second Grade Magistrate Violet Dzimbiri said the offences were serious, particularly because Yashini committed them while the homeowner was asleep.
The court sentenced him to six years for burglary and two years for theft. The sentences will run consecutively, giving him a total of eight years in prison with hard labour.
Yashini hails from Chimombo Village under Traditional Authority Nkhanga in Nkhotakota District.
