FIFA president Gianni Infantino has saluted Malawi’s Scorchers after their historic WAFCON run secured a semi-final place and qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has congratulated the team for reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their achievement as a historic milestone for women’s football in Malawi.
In a letter released by FIFA, Infantino praised the players for their commitment, passion and hard work, which have propelled the team into the final stages of the continental tournament.
He also commended the coaches, players and everyone involved in the Scorchers’ campaign for their efforts in making the achievement possible.
The semi-final berth has also brought a major financial reward, with the Scorchers guaranteed a minimum prize of US$500,000, about K900 million, following CAF’s increase in WAFCON prize money.
More importantly, the team has secured a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking a historic breakthrough for Malawi’s women’s football.
The Scorchers are now eyeing an even bigger achievement as they prepare to battle for a place in the WAFCON final and continue their push for the continental crown.
