alawi Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers, are 90 minutes away from a historic WAFCON final as they take on Algeria in today’s semi-final in Rabat, Morocco.
Coach Lovemore Fazili says the Scorchers are hungry for more after reaching the last four and will fight for their place in the final.
The Scorchers are already enjoying a historic campaign after qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and reaching the WAFCON semi-finals following their famous 2-1 victory over Ghana.
But Fazili says the team is not satisfied yet.
“We have come this far, and we believe we can go further. Our target now is the final. The girls are ready and all players are available,” Fazili said.
Fazili has urged his players to put their previous matches aside and concentrate on the crucial encounter with Algeria.
He has also challenged the forwards to be more clinical in front of goal and make better use of their chances.
The match is expected to be closely contested, with both teams having won three of their four matches at the tournament.
Sports analyst Nixon Kachiswiche believes the Scorchers have a good chance of reaching their first-ever WAFCON final.
“It will be a very interesting encounter because both teams have had a similar run, with three wins from four games,” Kachiswiche said.
He believes Malawi’s experience against some of Africa’s strongest teams gives them an advantage.
“The Scorchers have been the giant-killers of this tournament. They have beaten three powerhouses in African women’s football—Nigeria, Ghana and Zambia—to reach the semi-final and qualify for the World Cup at their debut WAFCON.
“I am giving the Scorchers the upper hand to reach the WAFCON final for the first time,” he said.
The Scorchers face Algeria at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.
A win would see Malawi reach the WAFCON final for the first time in the country’s history.
