Mutharika hails Scorchers’ historic WAFCON run
The Malawi first couple has hailed Scorchers for their WAFCON historical run
resident Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude have congratulated Malawi’s Women’s Football Team, the Scorchers, after their historic qualification for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final.
The Scorchers stunned Algeria 3-1 on Wednesday night to reach the final of the continental tournament for the first time, capping a remarkable campaign in Morocco.
Two goals from Tabitha Chawinga and another from Temwa Chawinga sealed the emphatic semi-final victory and sent Malawi into Sunday’s showdown.
In a message shared on their official pages, the Mutharikas described the achievement as a special and valuable piece of history for Malawi, praising the players for their determination and commitment to representing the country.
“WAFCON Final is that?” the Mutharikas wrote in celebration.
Mutharika congratulated the Scorchers for becoming the first debutant nation to reach the WAFCON final, saying their victory over Algeria was bigger than just a semi-final triumph.
“Now, only 90 minutes separate us from claiming the ultimate prize in African women’s football,” Mutharika said.
The Scorchers’ historic run has also secured Malawi a place at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, adding another landmark achievement to their campaign.
The team will now shift focus to Sunday’s final, where they will face Cameroon after the Central African side eliminated hosts Morocco.
