Scorchers’ historic night brings Malawi together
Scorchers Sponsor, the National Bank of Malawi hosted WAFCON semifinal watch party across the country
he Scorchers gave Malawi a night to remember, drawing fans out of their homes and into watch parties across the country, including those who had taken a break from watching national team matches, as the team secured a historic 3-1 victory over Algeria.
National Bank of Malawi plc (NBM) hosted watch parties at Moneymen Club in Blantyre, Aero Lounge in Lilongwe and Linde Lounge & Grill in Mzuzu, giving supporters a chance to watch the crucial WAFCON semi-final together.
The victory sparked scenes of excitement as Malawi secured its first ever place in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final.
Speaking after the match in Blantyre, NBM plc Top Mandala Service Centre Manager Wyson Kayira said the bank wanted to use sport to bring people together.
“As a sponsor, we believe in connecting people. We have people of different backgrounds here celebrating the win of the Scorchers and having fun together. This is what we would love to see, people connecting because of sports,” said Kayira.
He said the Scorchers’ journey from underdogs to finalists deserved continued support from Malawians.
“The team went in as underdogs, and today we are talking about the finals. We thank them for making it. They need to know we are cheering them, not just here in Blantyre, but also in Lilongwe and Mzuzu, where they rendered their support. We will rally behind the team until they get the trophy,” said Kayira.
For fans, the night was about more than simply watching a football match. It was an opportunity to reconnect with the national team and share a historic moment with fellow supporters.
Wyness Nyirenda, who attended the Blantyre watch party, said the atmosphere made the victory even more special.
“I would like to thank the Bank for organising this watch party. Being out here, connecting and celebrating the victory of the Scorchers with other fans is thrilling,” said Nyirenda.
She also praised NBM for putting its customers at the centre of the celebration and said she was looking forward to the bank’s plans for the final.
The Scorchers sealed their place in the final through goals from sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, with Tabitha scoring twice and Temwa adding the third.
Their victory has given Malawi another reason to rally behind the national team as the Scorchers prepare for their biggest match of the tournament.
Scorchers will on Sunday play Cameroon in the WAFCON final.
