hey are still young, but the exploits of Malawi’s Scorchers have already earned them a place among the country’s football greats.

The Football Legends Association has declared the players eligible for legendary status, following their remarkable run at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The recognition comes after the Scorchers reached the final of the continental tournament, completing a campaign that has captured the imagination of Malawians and given women’s football a new sense of pride.

Football Legends Association Board Chairperson Jim Kalua told the local media that the team’s performance was enough to qualify its players for registration with the association.

Kalua said the Scorchers’ historic achievement deserves special recognition, particularly considering the level of competition they have faced at the tournament.

He also praised government, through the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, for supporting the development of women’s football.

Kalua further commended Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya and Women’s Football Association president Adelaide Migogo for their contribution to the growth of the women’s game in Malawi.

The recognition comes as the Scorchers prepare for the biggest match of their campaign when they face Cameroon in the WAFCON final on Sunday.

Malawi have lost just one of their five matches at the tournament, underlining the consistency behind their historic run.

The Scorchers started their group-stage campaign with a 3-2 victory over Nigeria before defeating Egypt 3-1. They then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Zambia, but still secured their place in the quarter-finals.

In the knockout stage, Malawi continued their impressive run by beating Ghana 2-1 before edging Algeria in Wednesday night’s semi-final to secure a place in the final.

The victories have transformed the Scorchers from tournament participants into serious contenders for continental glory.

Now, with Cameroon standing between them and the WAFCON title, the young Scorchers have an opportunity to cap their historic campaign with the biggest prize yet.
