Boy dies after traditional circumcision in Thyolo

A 9-year-old boy has died after undergoing traditional circumcision at an initiation camp in Thyolo district.

Speaking to the local media, Inkosi Bvumbwe said the incident happened at Kakhomba Village in the area of Traditional Authority Bvumbwe in the district.

It is reported that the boy died on Saturday, August 15, after reportedly losing a significant amount of blood following the procedure.

According to Inkosi Bvumbwe, medical findings showed that the circumcision had not been properly performed, resulting in excessive bleeding.

The incident has since raised concerns over the safety of traditional circumcision practices, particularly where procedures are conducted outside regulated medical settings.

Following the death, Inkosi Bvumbwe notified the police and ordered the closure of the initiation camp, where eight other boys were undergoing circumcision.

The traditional leader also fined two traditional circumcisers one goat each for admitting children into the camp without following the required procedures.

Police have not yet commented on the matter, saying investigations are still underway.

However, the traditional leader said the person who performed the circumcision on the deceased boy has fled the village.

The incident comes amid longstanding concerns about complications associated with unsafe circumcision practices.

In most parts of Malawi’s Southern Region, it is common for boys to attend traditional initiation camps during the holidays at the end of the school calendar, where they undergo circumcision and receive cultural teachings.
