Discharged, but not free: Namiwa returns to Maula Prison

Sylvester Namiwa’s discharge from hospital on Tuesday did not mark the end of his ordeal. After receiving treatment for a tonsil problem, the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) executive director was discharged and taken back to Maula Prison.

Namiwa had been taken to hospital after complaining of problems with his tonsils while in custody. According to CDEDI spokesperson Promise Thomu, he received the treatment he needed and was subsequently cleared to leave the hospital.

But his next destination was not his home or the company of his family. It was Maula Prison in Lilongwe, where he remains on remand in connection with the case he is facing.

For a moment, the hospital offered Namiwa a different environment from the prison walls he has become accustomed to since his arrest. Medical attention replaced the routines of custody, before his discharge brought him back into the same legal reality.

Thomu confirmed that Namiwa was being taken back to Maula after his discharge, marking another turn in the unfolding story of the detained CDEDI leader.

The development also highlights the human side of remand custody, where even a hospital visit can become only a temporary break from detention. For Namiwa, treatment may have addressed his immediate physical complaint, but it did not change his legal status.

His return to Maula therefore leaves two separate issues running side by side, the state of his health and the unresolved case that has kept him behind bars.

As Namiwa settles back into prison after his medical episode, his journey remains far from over. The hospital chapter has closed for now, but the uncertainty surrounding his continued detention remains.
