This afternoon, the Scorchers with their silver medals around their necks are expected to step off the plane onto Malawian soil to beaming, joyful faces in celebration of their outstanding performance at 2026 WAFCON in Morocco.
At exactly 3:30 PM, the plane carrying Malawi’s 2026 pride will touch down at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe.
First Lady Gertrude Mutharika is set to lead the welcome for the heroines who went as debutants and finished as runners-up, while also booking a slot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
‘Malawi to the World’ the nation has made history in women’s football, a feat that has united Malawians at home and abroad.
To celebrate the team’s achievement, Sunbird Hotels and Resorts will host the Scorchers upon their arrival.
Sunbird Head of Sales, Marketing and Distribution, Temwa Kanjadza, said the company is thrilled to host the team after a remarkable achievement a performance that has made the country proud and inspired the nation.
The Scorchers beat Nigeria and Egypt, and lost to Zambia in the group stages.
They then defeated Ghana 2-1 in the quarter-finals and Algeria 3-1 in the semi-finals, before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Cameroon in the final.
