The Scorchers made history at the WAFCON in Morocco, reaching the final in their debut appearance and securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Their remarkable run saw them overcome Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana and Algeria before finishing as runners-up after losing 3-0 to Cameroon in the final.
On Wednesday, the team received a heroes’ welcome in Lilongwe as Malawians celebrated their historic achievement. The reception included a grand parade and celebrations honouring the players and technical team for putting Malawi on the continental football map.
Speaking to Malawi24, gender activist Maggie Kathewere Banda said the national women’s football team’s achievement has not only brought pride to Malawi but also highlighted the potential of women and girls in different sectors of society.
Kathewere Banda said the achievement should serve as proof that women can excel when given opportunities and the right resources.
She said the Scorchers’ success should motivate women who may feel discouraged or believe certain opportunities are beyond their reach.
Banda encouraged women to have confidence in their abilities, remain focused and be prepared to overcome challenges on their way to achieving their goals.
She said determination, resilience and hard work are key qualities women should embrace to make progress in their respective fields.
“Women should learn to believe in themselves. No one else will give them a chance unless they give themselves a chance. They should believe that everything is possible,” said Banda.
She said the Scorchers have demonstrated that women can compete at the highest level when supported and given platforms to showcase their abilities.
Banda further called on parents, communities, organisations and government to continue investing in women and girls by providing opportunities in sports, education, business, leadership and other areas.
She also urged women to support one another instead of pulling each other down, saying the success of one woman can inspire many others to pursue their ambitions.
