President Peter Mutharika has awarded K5 million to each player of the Malawi national women’s football team, the Scorchers, following their historic performance at the WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
The President made the gesture during a luncheon held in honour of the team following their return from Morocco.
First Lady Madam Gertrude Mutharika said the cash award was part of the government’s appreciation for the players’ outstanding performance and commitment to representing Malawi.
She said the Scorchers had made history at the WAFCON and deserved recognition for their achievement.
The First Lady also presented various gifts to each player who represented the country at the tournament.
The Scorchers made history in Morocco by reaching the WAFCON final for the first time and securing qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
