Councils told to ensure transparency in K54bn road funds

As high hopes rise for improved road infrastructure across the country following the disbursement of K54 billion to local councils by the Roads Fund Administration (RFA), calls for transparency and accountability in the use of the funds have emerged.

The development comes at a time when many roads across the country are in a dilapidated state, raising concerns over road safety and contributing to road accidents.

The poor condition of some roads has also made transportation difficult for motorists and communities, increasing calls for urgent rehabilitation and maintenance.

Speaking to Malawi24, social commentator Latimu Matenje said the disbursement was a positive development as it could help improve the country’s road infrastructure, which he said is currently in poor condition.

Matenje, however, urged local councils to be transparent about the road projects to be implemented using the funds.

He said councils should clearly identify and inform the public about the roads they intend to rehabilitate, maintain or construct.

Matenje also called on councils to follow all required procedures, including the tendering process, saying this would promote accountability and keep the public informed about how the funds are being used.

Meanwhile, Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) President Isaac Jomo Osman has assured the RFA that the councils will put the funds to good use

Lilongwe and Blantyre City Councils have each received K15 billion, while Mzuzu and Zomba City Councils have received K8 billion each.

Mangochi has been allocated K5 billion, Kasungu K2 billion, and Lucheza K1 billion
