Chihana praises late Lucius Banda

egendary musician Lucius Banda has been described as a visionary icon who believed in a progressive Malawi.
Second Vice President Enock Chihana made the remarks on Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Balaka during the unveiling of Banda’s K31 million mausoleum.
Speaking after a Mass led by Bishop Montfort Stima at the Banda family’s Andiamo residence in Sosola Village, Chihana said Banda was a close friend with whom he shared a vision for Malawi’s progress.
“Lucius was a close friend of mine, and we shared the same vision on how Malawi can progress,” said Chihana.
Chihana said he had great respect for Banda and urged Malawians to emulate his principles, courage and self-belief.
The gathering brought together political leaders, traditional chiefs, musicians and fans who gathered to honour the late musician, whose songs addressed governance, poverty and social justice.
Organizing committee chairperson Allan Essau said a museum and offices for the Lucius Banda Foundation would be constructed next to the mausoleum to preserve the musician’s legacy.
Lucius Banda died on June 30, 2024, at the age of 53 at Sunninghill Hospital in South Africa after battling kidney failure.
