Unidentified woman has died, 12 others injured in Chikwawa road accident
journey to Dyeratu Trading Centre ended in tragedy on Saturday after a minibus overturned while descending the Chikwawa escarpment, leaving one woman dead and 12 others injured.
The accident occurred near Thabwa Roadblock when the minibus, registration number BV5500, failed to negotiate a bend and overturned.
Chikwawa Police Public Relations Officer Dickson Matemba said the minibus was travelling from Maziabango to Dyeratu Trading Centre with 14 passengers on board.
According to Matemba, the unidentified woman was rushed to Chikwawa District Hospital but died upon arrival.
The 12 other passengers sustained various injuries and are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The accident has also triggered a police manhunt for the driver, identified as 35-year-old Chimwemwe Thebuka, who reportedly fled the scene.
Matemba said Thebuka is expected to face a charge of causing death by reckless driving once arrested.
Police have since urged motorists to exercise extra caution and observe road safety measures when driving along the Chikwawa escarpment, which has steep and winding sections.
