inancial challenges have forced organizers of one of Malawi’s biggest arts and entertainment events to rethink their plans for this year.
The Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival will now return in 2027, with organizers citing the country’s difficult economic environment and inadequate financial support.
In a statement, organizers said rising operational costs, foreign-exchange shortages, funding cuts, business challenges and a difficult operating environment had made it difficult to secure the financial backing needed for the 2026 festival.
The organization says the decision followed an assessment of the current economic situation and the level of financial support secured for the event.
“Proceeding with a major event without sufficient financial backing would expose the festival and those who depend upon it to an unacceptable level of financial risk,” the organizers said.
The organizers have assured people who had already purchased tickets that they will receive full refunds.
They said details of the refund process, including the steps ticket holders will need to follow and applicable timelines, will be communicated through the festival’s official communication channels.
The festival has apologized to ticket holders, partners and supporters for the inconvenience caused by the postponement, while thanking them for their patience and continued support.
The organizers said the postponement is aimed at protecting the long-term future of Lake of Stars rather than ending its presence on Malawi’s cultural calendar.
They said the additional time will allow them to reassess their approach, strengthen local and international partnerships and expand their networks ahead of the 2027 edition.
Established in 2003, Lake of Stars has grown into one of Malawi’s most prominent cultural festivals, bringing together Malawian and international artists and attracting audiences, tourists, businesses and cultural organisations.
The festival also supports Malawi’s creative economy by creating opportunities for artists and generating business for service providers in sectors such as hospitality, tourism, transport and other creative industries.
The postponement means stakeholders in these sectors will now have to wait until 2027 for the next edition of one of Malawi’s biggest annual cultural events.
