1,800km for nothing! Wanderers humiliated in Tanzania

They travelled to Tanzania dreaming of a comeback, but “Angerezi” were reduced to spectators as Simba SC ran riot, leaving the Malawian giants with a miserable 1,800-kilometre trip home.

Mighty Wanderers suffered a 6-1 defeat to Simba SC in the second leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Sunday.

The result saw Simba progress 7-1 on aggregate, having won the first leg 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe a week ago.

Braces from Clatous Chama and Libasse Gueye, plus goals from Karabo Makgalwa and Morice Chukwu, sealed the win for the Tanzanian Red Lions giants.

Wanderers’ only consolation came from midfielder Isaac Kaliati, who converted a penalty.

Despite returning to CAF competition after eight years, the Lali Lubani Boys lacked the cutting edge to overturn the deficit.

After the match, interim coach McDonald Nginde Mtetemera expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, saying it was unfortunate to lose by such a margin and that some players took the game lightly.

“I am very bitter with some of the players’ performances,” he said.

He, however, said lessons had been learnt and that it was time to go back and work on the team’s fighting spirit.

“We really need to fight for it. It’s how we get our bread,” he added.

Mighty Wanderers will now travel over 1,800 kilometres back home to resume FDH Bank Premiership duties against Blue Eagles.
